When a heat pump might suit
- Your boiler is nearing the end of its life and you'd like to move away from gas or oil.
- The home is reasonably well insulated (heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures).
- You have outside space for the unit, and ideally room for a hot water cylinder.
- A survey will check radiator sizes. Some may need upgrading.
Heat pumps don't suit every home. The survey will show if it isn't a good fit, and you can stop there.

Costs and grants
Boiler Upgrade Scheme: in England and Wales, eligible property owners can get £7,500 towards an air source (air-to-water) or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump. Until March 2027, homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas connection can get an extra £1,500 (£9,000 in total). Your MCS-certified installer applies and takes the grant off your quote. Hybrid systems are not eligible. Check full eligibility on GOV.UK (checked 14 October 2026). Scotland has separate support via Home Energy Scotland.
Installed cost: for air-to-water heat pumps installed under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in April to June 2026, the median reported cost was £12,908 before the grant, and half of installations cost between £11,128 and £15,627. After the £7,500 grant, that median works out at about £5,400. Bigger homes, radiator upgrades and a new hot water cylinder can push the price up.
