Privacy notice

Clear Beacon is the data controller for the information described here. You can reach us at privacy@clearbeacon.co.uk.

This is the complete list. Every field the form submits is named here, including the ones you do not type yourself.

What you answer:

• your first name
• your email address
• your phone number
• your postcode, or just the first part of it
• the school year your child is in now — one of Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 or above, or “not sure yet”
• whether you would like tuition online, in person, or either
• when you would like to start — as soon as possible, this term, next term, or still working it out
• the schools or exam you are working towards, if you fill that box in
• anything you choose to write in the notes box
• whether you ticked each consent box, and the exact wording and version of each statement you were shown

What is attached automatically:

• a reference such as CB-XXXXXX, generated in your browser so you have something to quote if you get in touch
• the campaign record described under which advert brought you here, and only if you agreed to measurement. If you did not, that field is sent empty
• a hidden field that is always empty when a person fills the form in, and the number of seconds you took. Both exist only to spot automated submissions, and neither says anything about you

We do not ask for your child’s name, school, date of birth or any other detail about them. The school year is the only thing we record that relates to your child, and you provide it yourself. Please do not put your child’s name in the notes box or in the schools box.

When you arrive from an advert, the link carries labels describing it: the campaign, ad set, creative, placement and the geographical or timing test it belonged to, the utm_ labels you can see in the address bar, and a click identifier — Meta’s fbclid, Google’s gclid, TikTok’s ttclid, Microsoft’s msclkid — which is unique to your click and is what those companies use to tie a visit back to you. The address of the page you came from is available to us as well.

None of it is stored unless you agree on the measurement bar. Not the click identifier, and not the campaign labels either: they are recorded for advertising measurement, none of them is needed to show you the page you asked for, and they end up attached to an enquiry carrying your name and your phone number. So the whole record waits for your answer.

If you decline, or later turn measurement off, everything already stored is deleted at once: the record itself, any cookie a measurement tag had set, and anything else this site had put in your browser apart from your answer to the measurement question. We keep that one so we do not ask you again.

The labels stay in your address bar, because we do not rewrite the link you followed, but we stop reading them. What is stored is held in your browser’s session storage, under a first party key, and is gone when you close the tab in any case.

The delayed flights page has no form. You are not asked for your name, your email address or your booking, and there is nothing on it that sends us a message.

The departure board itself is fetched by our server from a flight data company, not by your browser. That company is asked one question — what is leaving this airport — and is told nothing whatever about you. Your browser never contacts them, so they do not see your address, your device or the fact that you visited.

If you have agreed to measurement, tapping a flight sends the airport, the flight number, the destination, how late the flight is and which distance band it falls in to whichever measurement tag is running. We want to be plain about what that means rather than let it look harmless: on its own a flight number is not about you, but it travels alongside the click identifier described above, and the combination says which airport you are standing in and where you are going. That is why it waits for your answer like everything else, and why it is not sent at all if you decline.

If you have not agreed, none of it is sent. The page works identically; nothing about the board or the flight you tap changes.

There is currently no claims company on that page and no outbound link to one. When there is, this notice will name them and say what following the link does before it appears.

We use your details to deal with your enquiry and to find tuition that fits what you have described. The lawful basis is your consent, given by ticking the box that says: “Clear Beacon may contact me by email or phone about this enquiry.”

You can withdraw that consent at any time by emailing us. Withdrawing it does not affect anything done before you did.

For the cookies and the campaign record described above, the basis is separately your consent, given on the measurement bar. You can withdraw that yourself at any moment using the control below or the one in the footer of every page, and it takes effect immediately rather than on your next visit.

We also have a legitimate interest in keeping the site working and secure, which covers the spam checks described above.

We do not currently pass your details to any other company. There is deliberately no option on the form agreeing to share your information with unnamed “selected partners”.

When we do work with a tuition provider, the form will name that company and ask you separately. Your enquiry will be accepted whether or not you agree, and your details will not go to anyone we have not named to you first.

The site is built and hosted by Netlify, and the enquiry form is handled by Netlify Forms. That means your submission is stored on Netlify’s systems and we read it from there. Netlify is our processor: it handles the enquiry on our instructions and for no other purpose. Netlify is a US company and operates infrastructure outside the UK, under the safeguards set out in its own terms.

Clear Beacon is free for you to use and you pay us nothing. We expect to earn our money from tuition providers instead, usually a fee for introducing an enquiry, and in some cases a share of what you go on to spend with them. No such arrangement is in place yet. This notice will say so when one is.

We would rather set that out plainly than describe ourselves as impartial. Being paid to introduce you to someone is a real interest, and you should be able to take it into account when you weigh up anything we tell you.

We keep enquiries for 90 days from the date you send them, then delete them, both from our own records and from the Netlify Forms inbox. If you ask us to delete yours sooner, we will.

Deletion is done by hand, and checked on the first working day of every month. We would rather tell you that than imply an automatic process we have not built yet. If you want to know when your enquiry is due to go, email us and ask.

The campaign record and your measurement answer live in your own browser, not on a server. The campaign record is cleared when you close the tab, and immediately if you turn measurement off. Your measurement answer is kept until you change it or clear your browser storage, so that we do not keep asking.

Nothing from Meta or Google loads on this site until you agree to it. At the moment no measurement tool is set up on this site at all, so nothing from either company is loaded whatever you answer, and neither sets a cookie here.

If you decline, or ignore the bar, nothing is loaded and the site works exactly the same. We store your answer in your browser so we do not ask again.

When a measurement tag is running, what we send it is:

• that a page was viewed, that the form was started, which step was completed, and whether the enquiry was sent or failed
• with a completed enquiry: the school year, whether you chose online or in person, and when you want to start
• on the delayed flights page: that the board was shown, which flight you tapped, and that you followed the link to a claims company — with the flight details described under delayed flights
• the campaign labels and click identifier described above
• nothing at all if you have not agreed: no event is sent
• the area name in the page address, if the advert used one

We do not send your name, your email address, your phone number, your postcode, the schools box or your notes to either of them. Those are never included in a measurement event. Nothing is sent as you type in the flight search box: a flight number is recorded only when pressing Check opens a flight for it, which is the same event as tapping a row.

Change it here, at any time, without giving a reason. Turning it off takes effect at once: the campaign record goes, any measurement cookie goes, any measurement tag already running on the page is stopped, and no further event is sent. Your answer to this question is the only thing left behind.

This is separate from the boxes on the enquiry form. To change your mind about being contacted, or about an enquiry being passed on, email privacy@clearbeacon.co.uk with your reference.

You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or ask us to stop using it. Email privacy@clearbeacon.co.uk and we will reply within one month.

If you are not happy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. We would rather you told us first so we can put it right.

If we change how we use your information we will update this page and change the date at the top. Where a change affects an enquiry you have already sent, we will contact you about it rather than rely on you rereading this page.
